GLP-1 Peptides: My Holistic Take on the Hype
If you’ve spent any time scrolling through social media or reading health news lately, you’ve probably seen the buzz around GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. They’re being called a “miracle drug” for weight loss, and people are rushing to get prescriptions. I’m sure you’ve also seen the celebrates endorsing these medications as well.
Here’s my honest, personal take: GLP-1’s are not a magic solution. They’re a tool, and in my opinion, they should be the very last resort.
So lets start with this;
What Are GLP-1 Peptides?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a natural hormone in your body. Its job is to help regulate blood sugar, slow digestion, and tell your brain you’re full.
Pharmaceutical GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone. They can help people feel satisfied with less food, reduce cravings, and stabilize blood sugar levels. That’s why they were originally designed for people with type 2 diabetes, but today they’re also widely prescribed for weight loss. Sounds pretty simple right? Let’s keep going.
Who Should Consider Taking GLP-1’s?
This is where I want to pause. Just because these medications exist doesn’t mean everyone should take them.
My professional and personal belief:
GLP-1 medications should only be considered if you have 100+ pounds to lose.
They should be used only after you’ve committed to at least one year of consistent lifestyle changes- working in the gym, improving your nutrition (not just eating more fruits and veggies and prioritizing protein) that’s a fantastic start, but its not enough) and learning about your body with the guidance of a professional.
And even then, if you move forward, it should be with micro dosing and under the close supervision of a doctor or pharmacist who truly understands the ins and outs of these medications. (in my opinion pharmacists know way more about medications then doctors)
Why? Because weight loss is not just about taking a pill or an injection. It’s about learning to work with your body, your current needs and boundaries. When you fully understand your bodies response to food, not just physically but mentally too, it will be for life, not just while your taking medication.
Benefits of GLP-1 Medications:
I’ll be the first to say- GLP-1’s can work. Many people experience:
Significant weight loss.
Reduced appetite and fewer cravings.
Better blood sugar regulation.
Lower risk of diabetes complications.
For someone struggling with obesity-related health issues, these benefits can be life-changing. But like any medication, there are side effects and risks to consider:
Common: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation.
Serious (though less common): gallstones, pancreatitis, kidney issues, stomach paralysis, acute pancreatitis cancer. I will include 2 links here for you to review the studies Pubmed Google Scholar
Nutrient absorption: slowing digestion can affect how well your body takes in nutrients. When food is moving too fast threw the system, your body does not have time to absorb what it needs.
Psychological risk: relying on a medication instead of building lasting habits can leave you stuck when you stop taking it, leading to all that weight coming right back.
And here’s the truth: long-term effects are still being studied. We don’t yet know how decades of use will impact health.
A Holistic Perspective
This is why I always encourage my clients to explore every other avenue first. GLP-1’s may be a tool, but they don’t teach you the most important piece: how to nourish your body in a sustainable, holistic way.
Here’s what I believe is foundational:
Education on Whole Food Nutrition Not just “eat your fruits and veggies,” but learning how food impacts your cells, hormones, and energy. Which foods fuel you? Which ones trigger cravings or digestive upset?
Tracking Your Blood Sugar Using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is an incredible way to see how your body responds to different foods in real time. It’s personalized, not guesswork.
Gut Microbiome Support A healthy gut isn’t just about digestion, it’s about metabolism, mood, and longevity. Balancing your gut bacteria can have a huge impact on weight and overall health.
Movement & Strength Exercise isn’t punishment; it’s how you build strength, support your nervous system, and create metabolic flexibility. The more muscle mass you have your body does not need to work as hard. Your heart is more efficient at pumping blood with each pump.
Consistency & Support True transformation happens when you commit to showing up for yourself over time, with education, guidance, and accountability. Read that line again!
My Bottom Line
GLP-1’s are not the enemy, but they’re not the answer either. If you’ve put in the work, explored nutrition, movement, gut health, and stress management, and you still need extra support, they may have a place. But they should never be the first step.
Start by educating yourself, working with professionals, and focusing on building habits that serve you for life. That’s the real foundation of health.
Because at the end of the day, no medication can replace the power of truly understanding and nourishing your body.
